Abstract

With increasing age and frailty there may be difficulty in maintaining activity for general health. It is of paramount importance that older people are given the guidance to ensure that they have correct seating to encourage function and mobility. Advice can be obtained from occupational therapists and physiotherapists, but as physicians involved in the care of the older person, it is essential that we have a basic understanding of this subject. As part of a holistic approach, the goals of seating include promotion of mobility, activities of daily living, postural stability and control. Other factors to consider are improving quality of life, respiratory function and oral intake. This paper aims to provide an introduction to achieving these goals through seating and adaptations.
