Abstract
Self-awareness, which involves high-level cognitive functions, may be impaired by alcohol use disorder especially in the elderly, more vulnerable to the toxic effects of the substance. Alcohol-related cognitive and behavioral impairments, now clearly defined, can mimic the appearance of neurodegenerative diseases, thus raising the question of their differential diagnosis. Screening tools to detect alcohol use disorder and cognitive disorders consecutive to alcohol use are now available to clinicians. An adjustment of care is required for elderly people with alcohol use disorders who exhibit cognitive disabilities that may hamper motivation and limit the awareness of their pathology.
