Abstract
Patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) often report prospective memory (PM) deficits. It is generally acknowledged that PM deficits could be an early cognitive marker enabling clinicians to identify individuals who are at risk of developing dementia. However, PM deficits are not usually examined in clinical settings despite their high prevalence and the considerable impact of these problems on daily living, due mainly to the fact that there are few standardized, reliable PM tests available. In this paper, we will provide an overview of recent literature on PM assessment in MCI. Special attention will be paid to various assessment methods currently available. We will also report findings from preliminary studies conducted in our laboratory. We hope that this information will encourage clinicians to examine PM in their elderly patients with suspected cognitive decline.
