Abstract
Infections of the beard, or sycoses, are not unusual among the elderly: a minor cut in the beard area is often the port of entry. While Staphylocccus aureus is the main agent in folliculitis and impetigo, it is important to look for the differential diagnosis of dermatophytoses of the beard (or dermatophytic sycosis), which may be associated with general signs misleading the diagnosis. We report the case of an 80-year-old retired farmer, with no notable medical history, living with his wife, who consulted for an infection of the beard with fever and asthenia, resisting antibiotic treatments. The clinical and historic data led to the diagnosis of dermatophytoses of the beard, which was confirmed by the mycological examinations. The clinical evolution under antifungal treatment (terbinafine) was favorable within eight weeks.
