Abstract
Wherever they live, persons with dementia can be subject to abuse or mistreatment. This may take any form. This paper describes some of the reasons why people with dementia can be more vulnerable to abuse, and how abuse can identically manifest itself at home or in care settings. After some psychological considerations, we suggest evidence that elderly abuse is associated with an increased risk of childhood violence. The risk of abuse can sometimes be minimized through adequate support, attention for at risk situations, supervision and legal protection.
