Abstract
Diabetic maculopathy is a leading cause of poor vision in diabetic patients and a complex multifactorial pathology, of which diabetic macular edema is the main form. It is a major contributor to visual impairment in the elderly, with a loss of autonomy and socio-economic consequences. Diabetic macular edema is never an emergency, and treatment should only be envisaged after monitoring of systemic factors that cause and aggravate it: glycaemic levels, blood pressure, lipid levels, and treatment of sleep apnea. All these factors should be checked before any local treatment of the edema. Currently, intravitreal injections of anti vascular endothelial growth factor and corticosteroids are the principal treatment of diabetic macular edema.
