Abstract
In developed countries, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness and visual impairment in the elderly, accounting for half of the cases. A distinction should be made between the early stages (age-related maculopathy) and the later forms of AMD, which are exudative and atrophic forms. Both age-related maculopathy, characterized by the presence of drusen, and atrophic “wet” AMD require regular ophthalmologic monitoring. Wet AMD requires strict surveillance and frequent intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF agents. The subretinal macular hematoma complicating wet AMD is an event where prognosis is very poor. Its treatment is based on surgery, which aims to remove subretinal blood away from the macular region. Following surgery, close monitoring is required, as neovascular recurrences are common.
