Abstract
It is currently well demonstrated that the aging of the immune system, commonly named immunosenescence, contributes not only to the increasing incidence of infectious diseases and poorer response to vaccination, but also to the increasing age-related incidence of auto-immune diseases, cancers, osteoporosis, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes and atherosclerosis. This review gives a clear picture of what immunosenescence is exactly, and how it impinges innate and adaptive immunity. From recent data of the literature, the authors will show how aged individuals at risk for accelerated ageing of the immune system can be identified and what the current perspectives in terms of rejuvenating the immunosenescence process are.
