Abstract
This work attempts to objectify the respective cost of pressure ulcers, whether screening, preventing or curing and then assesses whether the resources allocated to nursing homes to prevent or treat is sufficient and can respond to this important public health problem. We evaluated the daily cost based on the material and human resources for all phases of management. Then we compared what was supported by PATHOS and what was not. The economic approach to this work shows that the allocated funds represent only 73.54% of the total budget spent on management of pressure ulcers (€ 4083). The cost of the screening phase is € 2214.90, € 671.14 of which are not funded; € 828.39 for the prevention none of which is supported by PATHOS and € 1039.71 for the treatment phase, € 409.34 of which are not funded. These differences are mainly due to the lack of funding by PATHOS for the preventive part (-100%), to a deficit of screening (-30.31%) and insufficient funding of the treatment phase (-39.37%) mainly concerning stage I and II pressure sores. The funding gap is also linked to the fact that such treatment is not considered as a frailty. This work is similar to that found in the literature on economic data regarding this subject. It shows how prevention is clinically and economically viable. However, it questions the basis on which funding is based in response to treatment and prevention.
