Abstract
Supportive community living for people with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders can be sustained, amongst other type of aids, by adapting the home environment. At home, the toilet block poses a specific problem related to the intimacy of the place. Occupational therapists often encounter specific difficulties with this space, which can require important technical and architectural changes to allow more autonomy. On the other hand, dementia friendly-environments require changes as much as possible respectful of past habits. Different occupational therapy methods enabled us to implement a specific approach which is based on the interrelations of the person with his/her sanitary space, instead of only taking in account the residual abilities of the person with dementia. The purpose of this approach is to create a rational space in order to optimize the abilities of the person as long as possible in his/her ecological environment.
