Abstract
The competency model is a popular subject in the business setting despite the difficulty in defining both the “concept” of competence and individual “competencies” due to the large number of factors involved. The model nevertheless has direct applications in medical and allied healthcare professions. According to the healthcare authorities in France, it is implied both in the development of an adequate cost containment policy and in the goal for improved healthcare services for the general population. Assessment of nursing skills is one of the central features of current regulations being prepared in the Health Ministry. The framework text describing the competencies of nurses has now been completed and applies to all forms of nursing practice, including the geriatric setting where nursing care can be the central element.
