Abstract
Nurses providing care for an elderly person with Alzheimer's disease must have in-depth knowledge of the disease. It is useful to have an understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, the expected disease course and specific and nonspecific manifestations. This enables adapting care not only to the needs of the patient, but also to those of their families. Healthcare situations involving an elderly person take on another dimension with people with dementia. Nurses have to deal with the inevitable progression of the disease and sometimes even invent unique solutions. They must be able to handle the anxieties and even the aggressiveness of sick people or their families. Research on the quality of services provided is proving to be a driving force behind healthcare. These different dimensions of the question fall directly within the field of expertise of nurses who work with patients with Alzheimer's disease.
