Abstract
The exceptional longevity of the Okinawa population may result from a combination of favorable factors and not only genetic determinants. The association of a protected environment with a way of life which combines specific food habits, low energy intake, physical activities, stress reduction, good familial support and rich social relations could explain this exception despite the low income in this population. Most of these factors are highly correlated with the culture and linked to the traditional lifestyle in Okinawa which may concentrate extremely favorable elements for health and longevity.
