Abstract
More, perhaps, than any other medical issue, care for elderly persons lies at the crossroads between health and social needs. Wise management of available means requires careful distinction between these two fields, yet with the potentially perverse effects which threaten the very basis of geriatrics. The risk grows with increasing concerns about social care financing. In this regard, the current project of reform of long care units is alarming.
