Abstract
The clinical microbiology laboratory has a role in environmental testing as part of an infection control program in a health care setting. A thorough epidemiological evaluation of the area of concern should generally be considered a first step in the process. Culture of a suspected area or material should be undertaken only after a probable source is identified, and the information gained will assist in the resolution of the problem.
