Abstract

When children are born, many parents buy a book of names and pick one, and that name carries the child throughout life. However, this is not the case with bacteria. This article examines the process by which bacteria are named and includes tables of the present name and previous designation(s) for bacteria of medical relevance to clinical microbiologists.
