Abstract
Chronic liver diseases are frequently complicated by osteoporosis. Some risk factors are associated with liver disease (chronic cholestasis, decreased production of growth factors such as IGF-1, increase of bone resorption (RANKL), iron overload). Primary biliary cirrhosis, alcoholic disease, viral hepatitis, hemochromatosis, liver transplantation and cirrhosis are strong risk factors for osteoporosis. This is the increase in fracture risk which makes the severity of the bone disease. The fracture risk assessment is based on measuring bone mineral density by absorptiometry (DXA) and checking all clinical osteoporosis risk factors. In addition to the liver disease treatment, treatment of osteoporosis is the same as osteoporosis in the general population with some peculiarities related to hepatic diseases.
