Abstract
An empirical antimicrobial therapy has to be promptly started. The antipseudomonal third generation cephalosporins or meropenem are recommended in the majority of cases. In the patients with allergy to beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones are an alternative. If staphylococci are suspected, vancomycin, alone or combined, remains the treatment of choice.
