Abstract
Peptidoglycan is an essential cell wall component of bacteria. The host exploits the peptidoglycan particular composition and uniqueness to bacteria for specific bacterial recognition. Peptidoglycan recognition is accomplished by receptors like the peptidoglycan recognition proteins (PGRPs) and the intracellular “nucleotide oligomerization domain” (Nod) proteins. These proteins are required for an adequate immune response to different pathogens. Inversely, pathogens have developed sophisticated strategies to modulate the host response.
