Abstract
The intestinal microbiota is a complex microbial community located at the core of the antibiotic multidrug-resistance issue. The intestinal microbiota may be colonized by multidrug-resistant bacteria which are kept at low densities with respect to the colonization resistance property exerted by anaerobic bacteria. Nevertheless, alterations of the intestinal microbiota such as those caused by antibiotics can lead to high intestinal densities of multidrug-resistant bacteria and increases the risk that such bacteria would be involved in infections, cross-transmissions and translocations. The preservation of the intestinal microbiota, especially with regards to the colonization resistance, brings new perspectives in the combat against multidrug-resistance.
