Abstract
Plasmodium falciparum malaria could be fatal, characterized by organ failure with cerebral injury. The main pathophysiological feature is the cytoadherence of parasitized erythrocytes mediated by the PfEMP1 protein. Artemisinin and its derivatives are currently the first-line drugs for the malaria treatment with an advantage with intravenous artesunate versus quinine in severe malaria. Resistance survey and research for new antimalarial treatments are the challenges of tomorrow.
