Abstract
Community-acquired and heath care-associated peritonitis are life-threatening infections often reported in elderly patients and in patients with severe underlying conditions. An early and multidiscplinary approach is mandatory. Early and adequate surgical and antibiotic therapies are the main goals to achieve. Empiric antibiotic therapy should be administered early and at an adequate dose. Data on local ecology in the ward and in the institution are required to improve empiric antibiotic therapy and to target adequately all the pathogens. Duration of treatment should be limited, 5 to 7Â days in community-acquired peritonitis and less than 15Â days in nosocomial and health care-associated infections.
