Labor increases catechol-O-methyltransferase expression in the amnion of human fetal membranes. Selective catechol-O-methyltransferase inhibition decreased prostaglandin E2 secretion in fetal explant cultures, suggesting a role for catechol-O-methyltransferase in human labor and delivery.
