Abstract
Disorders of plasma sodium are the most common electrolyte disturbances in clinical medicine. Hyponatraemia is defined by an elevated sodium level < 135 mmol/l. Mostly it is caused by accumulation of water or loss of electrolytes (sodium and potassium). Hyponatriaemia has mainly negative effects on the brain. The most common complications are therefore neurological impairments.
