Abstract
In this paper, the 2005 revision of ALA's position document on labeling and rating systems is closely examined and assessed, not only in comparison with the previous version of the document, but also in terms of its adequacy as a statement of library principles and as a practical guide for library practice. It is found to be ambiguous in meaning, questionable as a statement of what librarians believe, and useless as a practical guide.
