Medical management of renal transplantation

Renal transplantation is the preferred treatment for all patients (if suitable) with end-stage renal failure, and offers a significant survival advantage over dialysis. Complications derive mainly from the imperfect immunosuppressive regimen available to prevent rejection. Additional complications occur to patients with poorly functioning grafts as these patients have the added burden of a reduced glomerular filtration rate. The major issues for medical management following transplantation are cardiovascular disease, infection and cancer.
