Abstract
Thromboprophylaxis in surgical patients and in those hospitalized for an acute medical illness reduces morbidity, mortality, and costs in patients at risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Routine antithrombotic prophylaxis is performed by subcutaneous administration of low molecular weight heparin or pentasaccharide started pre- or postoperatively or during hospitalization without monitoring. New oral anticoagulants (dabigatran, rivaroxaban, apixaban) have demonstrated clinical utility in the prevention of venous thromboembolism in major orthopedic surgery offering potential advantages over traditional thromboprophylaxis.
