Usado inicialmente en las hemorragias por varices esofágicas no controladas.IndicacionesActualmente supone una opción de rescate cuando fracasa el tratamiento convencional de la ascitis refractaria, profilaxis secundaria de sangrado por varices esofágicas o gástricas, gastropatía de la hipertensión portal, hidrotórax hepático refractario, síndrome hepatorrenal (SHR) o síndrome de Budd Chiari (SBC).ContraindicacionesEn cuanto a las contraindicaciones, muchas de ellas son anatómicas, debidas a la dificultad técnica de su implantación. Sin embargo el riesgo de fallo cardiaco, hepático grave o encefalopatía tras su implantación van a ser condicionantes importantes para la selección de pacientes.
