Abstract
Pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) is the third cause of cardiovascular death after acute myocardial infarction and ictus and is the first cause of preventable death in hospital. The diagnosis requires the assessment of the clinical probability, D-dimer outcomes and imaging test. Most patients respond favorably to anticoagulant therapy. Fibrinolytic therapy is reserved for cases beginning as hemodynamic instability. The minimum duration of therapy must be extended to 3 months. Longer treatment should be assessed in patients with idiopathic PTE or with persistent risk of thrombosis.
