Abstract
Acute cephalea is one of the main causes for consultations in the emergency department, either as an isolated reason or as part of a more complex disease. The early diagnosis of cephalea secondary to processes that can endanger the patient's life is very important. A proper review of the case history and a complete physical and neurological examination are the doctor's basic tools for reaching the correct diagnosis and requesting the most appropriate additional tests. The treatment will depend on the type of cephalea; for primary cephalea, preventive treatment is of considerable importance for the prevention of new episodes.
