Abstract
Lung transplantation is an important therapeutic option for patient with respiratory pathology who, despite optimized background treatment, shows progressive clinical deterioration. Taking into account disease prognosis, there are two major medical decisions in order to prescribe this treatment: (1) the proper moment for the assessment by lung-transplant unit and (2) at what time the patient must be included in lung-transplant waiting list. Decision-making is provided by different classification criteria for each disease, exposed bellow. However making-decision must be individualized and discussed with each patient. Currently, number of donors is insufficient given the number of requests, and this situation prolongs the waiting time for patients aggravating their clinical status.
