Abstract
Anaerobes have been isolated in infections of virtually all anatomic sites, usually causing polymicrobial infections. Cavity oral mucosal surface is normally colonized by anaerobes, and anaerobic bacteria are involved in odontogenic and animal bite wound infections. Morever, Clostridium difficile colonizes the human intestinal tract and it is the main cause of antibiotic-associated colitis. C. difficile infection is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections and a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients.
