ResumenLa cefalea es uno de los motivos de consulta más frecuentes y puede corresponder a un espectro de enfermedades tanto benignas como malignas. Por eso es importante tener elementos en la evaluación del paciente que nos orienten en su diagnóstico diferencial, así como tener claro si necesitaremos estudios complementarios que ayuden a descartar causas secundarias. Las cefaleas primarias son la causa más frecuente de dolor craneofacial, por sobre las secundarias, en especial la migraña y la cefalea tipo tensión, las cuales si no son bien manejadas pueden significar un costo en calidad de vida para los pacientes, haciéndose crónicas o llevando al abuso de fármacos.
