La multiplicidad de medicamentos y condiciones subyacentes de los pacientes, afectan la identificación y manejo de las reacciones adversas. De ser posible, se debe emplear el menor número de agentes necesarios y se debe seleccionar aquellos con un mejor perfil de seguridad e interacciones.Este artículo describe los efectos secundarios, toxicidad e interacciones más importantes de los antibióticos más utilizados en pacientes hospitalizados, presentados por sistemas, tal como se presentan en la práctica clínica habitual y posteriormente de acuerdo a sus características farmacocinéticas y farmacodinámicas particulares, que permitan establecer herramientas de prevención y manejo.
