Abstract
The simple sleep-related movement disorders of childhood must be distinguished from childhood parasomnias. The simple sleep-related movement disorders are usually monophasic and do not seem to be goal directed. The parasomnias are often complex and seem to be goal directed, but the behavior is inappropriate and outside the conscious awareness of the individual. The simple sleep-related movement disorders of childhood include benign sleep myoclonus of infancy, rhythmic movement disorder, and childhood restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder in sleep.
