Abstract
For multicellular organisms, specialization of function has evolved to enable different tissues to carry out specific tasks crucial to the survival of the entire organism. Communication between different cells is vital to coordinate the activity of these separate functions. Individual cells within a tissue must be oriented appropriately to fulfil organ function and structural integrity of the tissue must be maintained. This contribution considers how such group activity is achieved.
