Abstract
PurposeHunter Holmes McGuire (1835 to 1900) was a Confederate surgeon who made a unique contribution to urology.Materials and MethodsArticles and lectures published by Doctor McGuire were reviewed pertaining to his experience treating diseases of the bladder and prostate.ResultsTreatment of the enlarged prostate toward the end of the 19th century was unsatisfactory and morbid. Doctor McGuire devised a new procedure he called the artificial urethra, in essence creating the first continent cutaneous vesicostomy, by which patients could void with good control.ConclusionsDr. Hunter McGuire is remembered for his unique contributions to medicine, surgery and urology.
