Effective one-step reduction of Pt/alumina–carbon catalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation of α-ketoesters

•15%alumina–carbon supported Pt catalysts were reduced by different methods.•No chlorine residuals on the catalyst which was directly reduced by 600 °C.•One-step reduction method was favorable for catalytic performance of the catalyst.•Pt/15%alumina–carbon can be reused for 23 times without distinct loss in activity.
