Abstract

Endometrial hyperplasia is an abnormal glandular proliferation of the endometrium resulting from exposure to unopposed oestrogens of endogenous and exogenous sources. Endometrial hyperplasia is rare in women under the age of 30 with an increasing incidence with age and an overall peak incidence in women aged 50–54 years. Most women diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia present with abnormal uterine bleeding including menorrhagia, inter menstrual bleeding or postmenopausal bleeding. The classification of endometrial hyperplasia is currently debated but the most widely used classification system (WHO 1994) defines endometrial hyperplasia as simple or complex with or without atypia. Treatment of endometrial hyperplasia can be medical or surgical and is dependent on cause, malignant potential, fertility requirements and medical co-morbidities as well as patient preference.
