Abstract
The practice in obstetrics and gynaecology is changing; therapeutic advances have resulted in fewer surgical procedures and clinical governance is demanding the increased presence of the consultant on the delivery suite. Consultant practice is becoming more specialized and there is much more direct patient care particularly in the emergency situation. Changes to training have been made to ensure that the training is appropriate for the future role of the consultant.
