There is increasing interest in quality control in medicine. The industrial concepts of quality control have been refined and adapted for use in the quality control and monitoring of medical care. This process is based on creating and interpreting control charts. The information contained in these charts is intuitive and they can be used to immediately detect deviations from established quality standards and to compare outcomes in different healthcare units, whether concerning specific physicians, departments, or hospitals. The present article describes the three types of control chart that currently have the greatest relevance in the clinical setting.
