Abstract
Market demands, declining reimbursement rates, and the growing influence of patients who are viewed as consumers dictate that mammography departments evolve and become full-service lines to meet the needs of women. This paper highlights the journey of a medical center's quest to engage the community in shaping a comprehensive women's center that was established on the expertise and talents of staff and the insight, wisdom, and gifts of highly informed women in the community. Although innovative technology was the driving force and the organizational vision was to provide the community with the most advanced diagnostic care in the world, the real catalyst for development into the Mission Women's Wellness Center was the dedication and compassion of staff. This commitment was complemented by the valiant efforts of a force of local community women and the legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange to provide a healing environment of patient-family-centered care with dignity, service, justice, and excellence.
