Abstract
Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) is a desirable technology for mobile screening programs. Satellite transmission of digital mammograms is fast, reliable, and secure. Digital telemammography with satellite transmission allows for on-line review of images and patient management. Performance of screening is at least as accurate with FFDM as with film screening. Our project has shown that implementation of FFDM with satellite transmission requires effort and resources but is feasible for the purpose of bringing state-of-the-art mammography to populations which are geographically remote, medically underserved, or busy in the workplace. We describe the implementation of a mobile screening FFDM program which transmits mammograms via satellite to a hospital-based breast center for image interpretation and patient management.
