Histoire du trachome au Canada 2

RésuméLe présent article fait découvrir l’existence du trachome au Canada. Les nombreuses références bibliographiques variées qu’offre la littérature médicale canadienne de la moitié du 18e siècle a la moitié du 19e siècle révèlent la contribution remarquable des ophtalmologistes canadiens. On y présente un aperçu clinique de la maladie avec ses symptômes et signes pour poursuivre sur l’étiologie et les divers modes de traitement. On signale ensuite la présence et la prévention du trachome au Canada tant à Toronto qu’à Montréal, tant dans l’Ouest canadien qu’à l’arrivée des transatlantiques a Halifax. On y décrit également les campagnes de prévention trop tardives du Département canadien de la santéé pour contrer la transmission de cette maladie.

The author retraces the history of trachoma in Canada. The numerous articles in Canadian medical journals from the middle of the 18th to the middle of the 19th century show the remarkable contribution of Canadian ophthalmologists. The clinical symptoms and signs followed by the etiology and the different modes of treatment are reviewed. The presence and prevention of trachoma in Canada, ranging from Montreal to Toronto, also in Halifax with the arrival of the transatlantic immigrants, as well as those reaching the western provinces of Canada are described. How the Canadian Department of Health belatedly introduced a prevention campaign only after a widespread dissemination of trachoma across the country is also examined.
