Abstract
This review examines the indications for imaging, its contributions and limits, in the exploration of muscle injuries observed in athletes. Imaging is a key element in the diagnostic work-up of an acute injury. Follow-up imaging is not systematically required but can be necessary. An example is the risk of recurrent hematoma that requires careful ultrasound follow-up. A more regular imaging follow-up can be indicated depending on the circumstances in high-level athletes. If the clinical improvement is insufficient during the rehabilitation program, ultrasound-MRI is indicated in order to search for sequelae hindering muscle function. If pain is again a problem after resumption of the sports activity, imaging will be necessary to determine the cause and establish the severity. Despite constantly improving performance, imaging cannot provide formal criteria for resumption of sports activity. Clinical assessment remains the essential element for decision-making.
