Abstract
Second metatarsal phalangeal joint instability and synovitis can be a cause of forefoot pain. The instability can be diagnosed by conducting a thorough history and physical examination. It is important to identify contributing pathology and address this at the time of surgery. When conservative treatment fails, surgical correction via a plantar condylectomy may be effective in treating the instability and plantar metatarsalgia. This procedure is simple to perform, effective, and avoids overtightening that may occur with plantar plate reconstructive procedures.
