Abstract

Quadriceps-sparing total knee arthroplasty is a minimally invasive surgery for total knee replacement. The first procedures were performed by the senior author and by Thomas M. Coon, MD, in February 2002. The instruments and the surgical technique have gradually improved, and there is now a minimally invasive tibial implant (MIS Tibia, Zimmer Orthopaedics, Warsaw, IN) that facilitates insertion of the prosthesis. This article will outline the procedure as performed for a posterior stabilized total knee design (Legacy High Flex Knee, Zimmer Orthopaedics). The results show less blood loss, less pain, a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery of range of motion, and faster return to normal activity.
