Glenohumeral joint arthritis is a disabling condition, especially when it occurs in athletes. The functional impairments these patients experience seriously impact their sports participation and activities of daily living. This condition in young people is quite challenging for the physician. This article outlines the common etiologies, presentation, and diagnosis of arthritis in the athletic population. A treatment algorithm is outlined that ranges from conservative modalities to surgery. Joint-sparing arthroscopic treatments, resurfacing techniques using biological and metallic implants, and shoulder arthroplasty are discussed. Additionally, a postoperative rehabilitation program and our general guidelines for return to play are included.
