Abstract

Children and adolescents with Down syndrome frequently are involved in athletic pursuits. In addition to well-known associated medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism and cardiac anomalies, these individuals also are susceptible to musculoskeletal problems. Patellar instability, hip joint instability, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, bunions, and cervical spine instability have been reported with a significant incidence in this population. Early diagnosis of musculoskeletal problems allows for more effective interventions that preserve function and allow safe participation in sports activities.
