Abstract
Total hip replacement is a common procedure, but it is still classified as major surgery. Despite advances in technology and patient safety, complications do exist. However, approximately 90% of hip arthroplasties performed will be uncomplicated. This paper aims to present the complications of total hip arthroplasty and the principles of their management. Complications such as dislocation, intraoperative fracture, infection, venous thromboembolism, bleeding, neurovascular injury, leg length discrepancy along with the long-term complications of wear and loosening are discussed and their management outlined.
